Media, the term has narrowed down to address news industry, and why not, it is the most controversial thing around. I remember the days as a child, when Doordarshan used to be the only live news media around. And, it undoubtedly lived up to its values .And then came the wealth solicitors.
The entire news industry was flooded with news channels clashing and tiffing, trying to be the sole conquerors of this untapped source of opulence. And, as is justified by the Darwin's Law, the weaker competitors fell back. Doordarshan, still living upto its values and responsibilities of providing unaltered news, came to the brink of being outcast. Media, since, has never looked back. It has continued making money out of junk and scoffing the very idea of responsible news. Today,a breaking news starts at a haunted bungalow and finishes on the atrocities done to some woman, who, somehow is nothing more than a character of some high TRP series. And if this doesn't serve the purpose, media is always ready to judge on the behalf of legal system. Its only a matter of time before "media" is used to address our judiciary. Every person, no matter how guilty, has a right to unbiased court trial. But unfortunately, our media daltonists fail to perceive their part of the job. It has been a tendency of "media" to interfere in whatever it can as long as people watch. It has long past its ideals of truthful news and it doesn't look like retreating, at all. And the janta janardan would watch anything that media has to offer, even if its lalu yadav spitting on the railway tracks, again, and again, and again, because in theory, its news. Its like an endless loop of hopelessness .I simply fail to understand what people aspire to gain out of such junk. Although, not everything that media does, can be castigated. There are some, though meagre, instances that earn a little positives for the media. By amplifying certain issues, it has certainly helped sort things out in time. Still, there is a lot to be introspected and realised. A strong media can really boost a nation's progress. Some stringent set of rules should be put through so as to mould this self destructive weapon into a useful constructive device before the timer runs out.
